Why silicone instead of rubber

Traditional rubber gaskets harden with heat and time, smell, leave black residue and become difficult to remove. The Cafelat silicone gasket is made from food-grade (FDA) silicone, with no smell or taste and an SGS food test report.

It matches rubber's compression strength but is softer, so the portafilter seals easily without over-tightening. The result: a cleaner taste in the cup and less wear on your machine.

Which thickness do I need? Cafelat E61 gaskets come in 8mm, 8.5mm and 9mm. Thickness sets where the handle locks: too thin and it swings too far round, too thick and it won't lock in enough. Ideally the handle should end at the 6 o'clock position, pointing towards you. The 9mm is the right choice when the handle passes that position with a standard gasket.

Installation tips

Remove the old gasket and clean the group seat thoroughly.
Never use sharp tools such as a screwdriver on the new gasket: the silicone may tear.
Press the gasket into place evenly, together with the shower screen.
Test the portafilter lock-in and check the handle ends at about the 6 o'clock position.
